THE ROLE OF THE WIFE/MOTHER
Jos 24:15 ......
as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD
Jos 24:15 ......

Mother’s Day
First a Wife Before a Mother
Pro 18:22 He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favour from the LORD.
The Woman as Wife
- Today we are celebrating the role women play in the home as wives and mothers
- Home is where your heart is. It should be a haven of peace, a safe place to rest and a place to be yourself. The husband may be ‘head of the home’ but the wife is ‘the heart of the home’
- ‘Love begins by taking care of the closest ones – the ones at home’ Mother Teresa
- Although God is spoken of in the masculine gender and is referred to as Father, there are aspects of the image/nature of God that are only properly displayed by a man and a woman complementing each other
- Gen 1:26-27Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness…"(27)So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Text: Prov 31:10-31
- Let’s look at 3 important functions of the wife and mother
First a Wife Before a Mother
Pro 18:22 He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favour from the LORD.
The Woman as Wife
- Some think that the main issue about being a wife is submitting – far from it! The wife we’ve just read about is creative, industrious and takes initiative
- Before it gets to family it speaks of the husband. The husband/wife relationship is the primary one on which a family is built. It speaks of the value and excellent wife can bring to her husband (vv11, 12, 23)
- Most marriages start out as a huge celebration as a young couple stands before God full of hopes and dreams. However, a happy marriage doesn’t just happen because you love each other (although love is a vital ingredient)
- Marriage is best described as a journey of engaging with one another, learning, adjusting, taking steps forward in God ‘After the wedding, there is a marriage’
- Wife, how is your relationship with your husband? Are you best friends? Are you enjoying life together?
- Many wives get so embroiled in the chores of motherhood that they forget about their husbands. Then, when the children leave home, there’s nothing left
- Just as a woman needs to be loved, so a man has a great need to be respected & admired. In so doing wives empower their men to live out their full potential
- Wife, what do you do if you have a husband who doesn’t serve the Lord? Don’t nag, don’t preach, certainly pray (secretly), but the key is being a great example
- 1Pe 3:1-2Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behaviour of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
The Woman as Mother - < >A child’s first relational connection is with its mother. The quality of this connection has a profound impact for the rest of its life
- An expectant woman’s motherly instincts grow and grow as she anticipates the arrival of her child and are full-blown when it is born
- This results in nurture, physical and emotional care, protective behaviour even self-sacrificing
- ‘The price of life is death’. Motherhood is not for sissies – a mother’s job is never finished
- V18 ..her lamp doesn’t go out at night V27 ..she does not eat the bread of idleness
- A mother is often more perceptive than the father of the children’s physical, emotional and spiritual well-being
- She must ensure her husband feels included and remains engaged
- She must not be overbearing or bossy with the children or when they leave home all her controlling behaviour may be focussed on her man
- Retirement years may end up ‘rough & rugged’ rather than ‘restful & relaxed’
The Wife as Home Manager
- Retirement years may end up ‘rough & rugged’ rather than ‘restful & relaxed’
- Pro 14:1The wise woman builds her house… Tit 2:4-5..train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home..
- < >Certainly, the ‘virtuous woman’ of Proverbs 31 had a lot on her plate and was full of initiative. She also seemed to be a ‘businesswoman’
- The origins of the English words ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ are interesting: Husband comes from ‘house-band’. He is the ‘band’ that keeps the home together, imparting strength and stability. Wife comes from ‘weaver’. She is the one that uses her clever hands to weave into the family fabric the things that bring so much love, joy and blessing
